The Big Steet, filmed in 1942, stars Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball.  

A shy busboy (Henry Fonda) devotes himself to a disinterested nightclub singer (Lucille Ball) who only dates wealthy men. When Ball is injured by a vicious gangster, she's deserted by all of her so-called friends and finds Fonda is the only person willing to take care of her.  This warm and witty Damon Runyon tale also stars Ray Collins, Agnes Moorehead, and Ozzie Nelson and his Orchestra. 88 min.  Black and White.
